Where to Enjoy Lord of the Lings Franchise

The Lord of the Rings movies are based on the much-loved book series by J. R. R. Tolkien. There are three films in the series – The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003).

The series is classified as ‘high-fantasy adventure’ and are filmed in spectacular landscapes in New Zealand. The series is one of the biggest and most expensive series ever filmed on a project basis, and are estimated to have cost up to $330 million taking around eight years to produce all three. The movies were filmed simultaneously and many locals were included in the production. The investment has paid off, with the movies among the highest-grossing of all time.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is set in ‘middle-earth’ (a fictional place) with the main character being a hobbit called Frodo Baggins who is played in each by Elijah Wood. The entire series is based on his mission to destroy the ring, which will ensure the end of its maker – the villain of the series, Dark Lord Sauron.

The success of the trilogy has been recognised by awards, with the Return of The King winning11 Academy Awardsincluding Best Picture, which also tied it with Ben-Hur and Titanic for most Academy Awards received for a film.

Most notable within the trilogy is the incredible special effects. There is a huge wow factor to the series and with the special effects being so spectacular there has been good reason for people to view the movies at the cinema to be able to appreciate the full impact.

Common rankings for the trilogy rate the The Return of the King as the best movie, followed by The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. The series has been followed by the spin-off series of ‘The Hobbit’ which is essentially a prequel to the Lord of the Rings series.
